Railway Town

Credits

An original folk song lamenting the and of the steam age of New Zealand railways.

Lyrics

Verse One
I was born in a railway town,
With fiery steam trains rolling down,
Rolling down the line,
Rolling, oh so fine,
Every hour on time.

Verse Two
We rode the railcar every day.
It took us near and far away.
Railcars were renowned
For travelling up and down
To the island's towns.

Verse Three
Now the railcar's past it's time.
Instead a milk train rides the line.
No rail rides for me.
The railcar's history.
It's milk train anarchy!

Verse Four
Morning tankers hit the rail,
Spewing product without fail.
Miles of milk, not wine;
Pasturised sublime,
Gurgles down the line.

Verse Five
The friendly, rolling railcar's gone
The way of burning Babylon.
Not the sound of steam,
But milk, cheese and cream
Haunts our railway dreams.

Verse Six
I was born in a railway town,
With fiery steam trains rolling down,
Rolling down the line,
Rolling, oh so fine,
Every hour on time.
